Baumrind Parenting Styles - Research Paper Example Baumrind and her colleagues were involved in an extensive research to establish the relationships between certain patterns in child-rearing and the specific child’s outcomes. The research on the Baumrind parenting styles was driven by the urge to find out the impact of parents in the development of children. In establishing these findings, Diana Baumrind engaged in a research which covered about hundred pre-school age children. Baumrind used naturalistic observation and interviewing parents among other methods of research. The research came up with four styles of parenting which were well distinguished. They were labeled as permissive, authoritarian, uninvolved and authoritative parenting styles. Among the four styles, Baumrind established three basic parenting styles; authoritarian, permissive and authoritative. The fourth basic parenting style that is, uninvolved/nonconformist parenting style, was established after a further research conducted by Macoby and Martin. The Baumr id parenting style study though conducted a long time ago; parents still find themselves using one of the four styles of parenting. Each of the parenting style is made up of different variations as well as combinations. The Baumrind parenting style consists of two combinations which are demand and control on one hand and on the other hand is responsiveness accompanied by acceptance. Baumrind was of the view that parents need not be punitive or aloof in dealing with their children. Thus she recognized the need for parents to come up with rules which govern the behavior of their children and be affectionate to their children. In her research she expresses normal variations involved in the four parenting styles. Baumrind rules out deviant parenting which is experienced in abusive homes. In most cases, parents tend to fall in-between two styles showing characteristics of different styles. In explaining the various types of parenting styles, Baumrind involves the two major factors that i s demanding and responsiveness. Authoritarian parenting style refers to a style whereby the parent expects a lot of respect ass obedience from their children. According to Baumrind an authoritarian parent is high demanding and controlling but has low responsiveness. One of the major characteristics of authoritative parenting style is strictness. The parents are very strict and mostly set strict rules for the children. This parenting style is perceived as the most rigid and inflexible compared to other parenting styles as suggested by Barber (1996). Such commanding expressions as shut up! Sit down! And others are common with parents who apply this style. There is a common expectation that the child has to obey without questioning any command. The parents do not explain much about the rules and regulations to their children thus children in this family do not give their opinions. Authoritarian parenting style is mostly exhibited in male parents as it has been culturally conceived that fathers are the authority figures in every family set up. In the past generations it was also conceived that children were expected only to be seen but not to be heard. Therefore it can be argued that this style is mostly used in those families where the traditional values are still upheld. Permissive parenting style presents the opposite of the authoritarian parenting style. Native American Ritual Dancing â€Å"It has often been said that the North American Indians ‘dance out’ their religions† (Vecsey 51). There were two very important dances for the Sioux tribe, the Sun Dance and the Ghost Dance. Both dances show the nature of Native American spirituality. The Ghost Dance and the Sun Dance were two very different dances, however both promote a sense of community. â€Å"The Sun Dance was the most spectacular and important religious ceremony of the Plains Indians of 19th-century North America† (Lawrence 1). The Sun Dance became a time of renewal and thanksgiving for Native Americans. Everyone had a role to play either in the preparation leading up to the dance, or within the dance itself. The entire tribe was expected to attend the ceremony. There were also some social aspects to the dance, such as powwow dancing in the afternoon and evening. The Sun Dance was an important ceremony, which was held once a year. Turner states that ritual stresses unity of (the) group, and that is exactly what was done in the Sun Dance. Different tribes held the ceremony at different times of the year. Generally, â€Å"The Sun Dance was performed in either the late spring or the early summer, when all the bands of the tribe were reunited after the winter† (â€Å"Dance†). The Sioux tribes celebrated the Sun Dance ceremony for four days. Other tribes are reported to extend the ceremony over eight days. This dance, like other Indian rituals and ceremonies is not rehearsed. There are many provisions that need to take place in order to prepare for the ceremony. In the week prior to the dance, the Sun Dance chief arrives early to set up his campsite and oversee the raising of the ceremonial tipi that the dancers dress and prepare in (McGaa 85). The Sun Dance chief is said to be the most respected holy man with in the tribe. The men of the tribe then join in the preparations for the dance by construct sweat lodges, which are used in the ceremony. They also collect other necessities, which are needed for the dance. The marshmallow candy originated in ancient Egypt. In its beginning, it started out as a honey candy that was flavored and thickened with Marsh-Mallow plant sap. Herbal Properties of the Marsh-Mallow Plant The Marsh-Mallow plant was harvested from salt marshes and on banks near large bodies of water. According to  the book Viable Herbal Solutions:   Nineteenth century doctors extracted juice from the marsh mallow plants roots and cooked it with egg whites and sugar, then whipped the mixture into a foamy meringue that later hardened, creating a medicinal candy used to soothe childrens sore throats. Eventually, advanced manufacturing processes and improved texturing agents eliminated the need for the gooey root juice altogether. Unfortunately, that eliminated the confections healing properties as a cough suppressant, immune system booster and wound healer. Making Marshmallow Candy Until the mid-1800s, marshmallow candy was made using the sap of the Marsh-Mallow plant. Today, gelatin replaces the sap in the modern recipes. Todays marshmallows are a mixture of corn syrup or sugar, gelatin, gum arabic and flavoring. The candy makers needed to find a new, faster way of making marshmallows. As a result, the starch mogul system was developed in the late 1800s. Rather than making marshmallows by hand, the new system let candy makers create marshmallows in molds made of modified cornstarch, similar to how jelly beans, gummies, and candy corn are made today. At about the same time, mallow root was replaced by gelatin, allowing marshmallows to stay in their stable form. In 1948, Alex Doumak, a marshmallow manufacturer, began experimenting with different methods of marshmallow making. Doumak was looking for ways to speed up production and discovered the extrusion process, which revolutionized marshmallow production. Now, marshmallows can be made by piping the fluffy mixture through long tubes and cutting its tubular shape into equal pieces. The Peeps Marshmellow Candies In 1953, the Just Born candy company bought the Rodda Candy Company. Rodda produced a handmade candy marshmallow chick and Bob Born of Just Born loved the way the marshmallow chick looked. A year later in 1954, Bob Born had a machine made that would mass-produce marshmallow chicks, which he trademarked Peeps. Just Born soon became the largest marshmallow candy manufacturer in the world. In the 1960s, Just Born started manufacturing seasonally-shaped Marshmallow Peeps. In the early 1980s, Just Born released the Marshmallow Peeps Bunny. Until 1995, Marshmallow Peeps were only produced in pink, white and yellow colors.
